As global institutions like the United Nations turn to their attention to human rights and climate change, local groups have been fostering the links between natural environments and digital environments for more than a decade.
Seven years ago,ÌýÌýin Detroit and theÌýÌýin Philadelphia each led the creation of a Digital Justice Coalition to support an Internet infrastructure that could better serve their communities. Access to inclusive technologies became critical to participation in all areas of community-building, including the fight against climate change.
Earlier this year, a coalition of groups from six Superstorm Sandy-impacted neighborhoods in New York City launchedÌýResilient Networks, a community wireless initiative led by ¹ú²úÊÓƵ’sÌýResilient CommunitiesÌýprogram and implemented through theÌýNew York City Economic Development Corporation’sÌýÌýprogram. Drawing on the work in Detroit and Philadelphia, these groups devised a new coalition, aligning a climate justice agenda with a digital justice framework, to build a future where technology builds resilience, preparedness, and equitable economic development.
Join ¹ú²úÊÓƵ’sÌýResilient CommunitiesÌýprogram, along with representatives from Detroit and Philadelphia Digital Justice Coalitions and other local groups, to release the new Resilient Networks principles and discuss how technology can make local voices more loudly heard.
