The writer John Fante once called Los Angeles "an empire carved out of cactus and dust." Today, it's a megacity full of bright lights and freeways, with a goal to reach 100% renewable energy by 2045. America's largest public utility, the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP), asked the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to help them figure out how to do it. The result was
