As we continue to grapple with stalled legislative output from a gridlocked Congress, the social safety net is slipping away. Food stamps, the Affordable Care Act, and workplace protections are on the chopping block, and the ordinary Americans who depend on these policies have the most to lose.

In her new book,Ìý,ÌýRep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.) details her quarter-century fight against shrinking social programs. Growing up in New Haven, Conn., she saw firsthand how hardworking people become vulnerable in the face of government indifference and neglect. And now, with nearly three decades in the halls of Congress, she argues that responsible protections to Social Security, housing assistance, and other policies are essential for our country’s health and promise of opportunity for all Americans.
