The ¹ú²úÊÓƵ Foundation’s National Security Studies Program held a conversation with award-winning author Anatol Lieven. He discussed his talks in July with figures close to the Taliban and the views they expressed on the contours of a possible peace settlement.

Officials recently dismissed the possibility of securing a political deal to end the conflict in Afghanistan, a longtime keystone of the American military strategy in Afghanistan, saying their goal now is to leave Afghanistan with the best tools possible for maintaining security and political stability. After 11 years of war, has the conflict budged at all in either the coalition’s or the insurgents’ direction?

Lieven and Bergen will discuss this question, as well as the likelihood of different future scenarios for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
