Over the past few years, U.S. counterterrorism officials have frequently highlighted the blows America has dealt to al-Qaeda, especially those to its central command in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But officials also continue to warn about the persistent threat posed by al-Qaeda affiliates and sympathizers that have flourished in places such as Yemen and North Africa. Gregory Johnsen, a Ph.D. candidate at Princeton and one of the preeminent scholars of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, examines the organization’s last strongholds in his new book The Last Refuge: Yemen, Al-Qaeda, and America鈥檚 War in Arabia. In a recent piece for the New York Review of Books, Robert Worth called Johnsen鈥檚 book, 鈥渁n authoritative and deftly written account of al-Qaeda鈥檚 Yemeni incarnation.鈥
