For decades, politicians have been pledging to make America energy independent, and for decades, they have failed.

Today, the nation finds itself caught between two diverging energy revolutions鈥攖he new technologies of oil and gas production on one end and the gains of renewable energy on the other. Partisan politicos are again promising that energy independence is within reach and insisting that only one approach holds the key.

In his latest book, The Power Surge, Michael Levi, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, attempts to cut through the polarized and inflated claims of the energy wars with on-the-ground reporting about what is really happening in the energy world. Ultimately, he argues, there are right ways to pursue both options, and it is time that we embrace a 鈥渕ost-of-the-above鈥 energy future.
