2025 Fellows books-year in review

Our Fellows鈥 2025 book releases drew significant attention across national and literary media, with multiple titles landing on bestseller lists, best-books roundups, and award longlists. Explore the books below:

No Way But Forward (January 2025)

In January,听Brian K. Barber听辫耻产濒颈蝉丑别诲听. The book has been praised for its deeply human portrayal of life in Gaza and was a 2025 finalist for the Independent Author Network鈥檚 Book of the Year Awards, recognizing its strength as a compelling narrative of resilience and survival.

The Great Retreat (February 2025)

In February,听Didi Kuo听谤别濒别补蝉别诲听. The book was reviewed in听, recognizing it for its sharp analysis of party decline and democratic dysfunction, and for offering a timely framework for rethinking the contemporary role of political parties.

Original Sins (March 2025)

In March,听Eve L. Ewing鈥檚听听debuted at听#15 onTheNew York Times听Hardcover Nonfiction Bestseller List听and a few weeks later appeared on听Publishers Weekly鈥檚 list of 鈥Four Books 国产视频 Racism in U.S. Education.鈥 The book was named one of听Esquire鈥檚 鈥35 Best Books of 2025,鈥 received a听听from听Publishers Weekly, and was featured in the听New Yorker鈥檚 鈥溾 column.听Original Sins听was longlisted for the Carnegie Medal in Nonfiction.

There Is No Place For Us (March 2025)

A second March publication was听Brian Goldstone鈥檚听, which garnered extensive national attention and was widely reviewed, including in听,听,听,听,听, and the听. It was recognized on听The Atlantic鈥檚 鈥10 list,鈥 was listed as one of 鈥50 notable works of nonfiction from 2025鈥 by听The Washington Post,听and named one of听The New York Times听鈥10 Best Books of 2025鈥听as well as one of 鈥100 Notable Books of the Year.鈥 Goldstone was named a finalist for the 2026 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.

Mother Emanuel (June 2025)

Kevin Sack鈥檚听听was published in June. The book was reviewed in听, was also named one of听The New York Times鈥 鈥10 Best Books of 2025,鈥听as well as one of its 鈥100 Notable Books of the Year.鈥澨Mother Emanuel听was also included on NPR鈥檚 鈥淏ooks We Love鈥 list.

The Fort Bragg Cartel (August 2025)

Seth Harp鈥檚听听debuted in August at听#5 onThe New York Times听Hardcover Nonfiction Bestseller List听and became one of the year鈥檚 most talked-about works of investigative reporting. The book has been widely praised, garnering听听from听Publishers Weekly听and coverage in听,听, and听, which named it one of 鈥The Best Books of 2025.鈥

A Thousand Ways to Die (September 2025)

In September,听Trymaine Lee听辫耻产濒颈蝉丑别诲听, a deeply reported blend of memoir and social history that has drawn strong critical praise, including a laudatory review from听听and prominent coverage on听,听, and听, for its searing account of the generational toll of violence on Black communities.

Without Fear (September 2025)

Another September publication was听Keisha N. Blain鈥檚听听received strong critical recognition and major award attention. Honoring its contribution to scholarship on human rights and Black women鈥檚 political leadership, the book was longlisted for the听Carnegie Medal in Nonfiction听and was reviewed in the听.

We Survived the Night (October 2025)

The last book release of 2025 was听Julian Brave NoiseCat鈥檚听, which, immediately after its publication in October, was met with widespread critical attention across literary and national media. NoiseCat鈥檚 book was named one of听The New Yorker鈥檚听鈥淭he Best Books of 2025.鈥听It was listed in听Harper鈥檚 Bazaar听among the 鈥30 Best Book Releases of Fall鈥2025,鈥 on听NPR鈥檚听鈥2025 Books We Love鈥听list.听We Survived the Night听was also on the November 鈥淏ook Club list鈥 by听Publishers Weekly听and was recognized by听Orion Magazine听as one of 鈥12 New(ish) Reading Recommendations.鈥 For his book, NoiseCat听听in听The Washington Post, and he听听the book on NPR鈥檚 鈥淔resh Air.鈥

The Year in Films

2025 Fellows films-year in reviewPaige Bethmann鈥檚 documentary premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award and the Audience Award in the Documentary Feature Competition. Widely praised by critics, the film was recognized for its powerful portrayal of Indigenous resilience and identity, with reviews in , , and .

Mike Giglio released , a feature-length documentary that delves into the American militia movement and the rise of the Oath Keepers, providing unprecedented access to founder Stewart Rhodes and his family. The film premiered on Sky Documentaries in January and later aired on MSNBC in February, offering a compelling and personal perspective on extremism in contemporary U.S. politics.

The Year in Longform

2025 Fellows longform-year in reviewVictor J. Blue and Matthieu Aikins collaborated on 鈥,鈥 an in-depth longform investigation for The New York Times Magazine that traced war crimes and impunity within the U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan. The series uncovered previously hidden details about misconduct, military culture, and the consequences of battlefield vigilantism, drawing on years of reporting and interviews with military personnel.

Anna Louie Sussman published 鈥,鈥 a three-part opinion series in The New York Times that investigates the ethical, legal, and scientific frontiers of reproductive technology and human embryos. The series shows how emerging scientific capabilities are straining existing laws and moral frameworks, inviting readers to reconsider long-held assumptions about embryos, science, and reproductive choice.

Katrina鈥檚 America: 20 Years Since the Storm

In July, 国产视频 convened Katrina鈥檚 America, a symposium marking twenty years since Hurricane Katrina reshaped New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and the nation. Bringing together 163 participants鈥攊ncluding expert Fellows and speakers鈥攖he event examined how the disaster exposed enduring failures in infrastructure, governance, media, and racial and economic inequality, and how those fault lines continue to shape public life amid climate change and displacement.

Katrina鈥檚 America was curated by Vann R. Newkirk II and organized in collaboration with the 国产视频 Fellows Program, the Future Security Program (a partnership with Arizona State University), and the 国产视频 Executive Office, with support from the .

25 Great Thinkers

25 Great Thinkers-book coverTo mark 国产视频鈥檚 twenty-fifth anniversary, the Fellows Program published , a special collection of reflecting on their work and its impact. Together, these stories explore how Fellows confront power, pursue truth, and reimagine what is possible in moments of uncertainty and change.

Spanning journalism, scholarship, art, and advocacy, the collection showcases the breadth of the Fellows community and the shared commitment to public-facing work that challenges assumptions, centers lived experience, and expands democratic imagination. 25 Great Thinkers serves as both a celebration of the program鈥檚 first quarter-century and as a testament to the role Fellows continue to play in shaping public discourse.

On the Horizon: Into 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the work continues. In the first half of the year alone, 15 new books, and counting, by 国产视频 Fellows will be released, ranging from investigations of political media to reporting on caregiving, mental health, cultural power, and histories of resistance and survival. Alongside new reporting, films, and long-form projects already underway, these forthcoming releases point to another year of ambitious, public-facing work that will shape important public debates.

In 2025, 国产视频 celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to placing bold ideas and new voices at the center of public life鈥攁nd helping turn them into action. From cybersecurity to racial justice, 国产视频鈥檚 research and advocacy have shaped public understanding, informed policy, and influenced the tools people use every day.

The Fellows Program embodies that mission. Over the past 25 years, 305 Fellows鈥攋ournalists, scholars, artists, and public thinkers鈥攈ave produced 180 books, 43 long-form reporting projects, 18 documentary films, and two podcast series that surface overlooked narratives and expand the public debate.
