There’s an important counterpart to the trend toward getting kids ready to enter school: getting schools ready for the kids. Ready Schools has been a buzzword for more than a decade. In 1998, the National Goals Panel convened experts to determine what comprised a 鈥渞eady school.鈥 But even today it is not always clear what this really means.

In this podcast, we鈥檙e speaking with Sandy Miller, director of the office of early learning and school readiness at Ohio’s Department of Education. Last month, Sandy was among the presenters at a session on Ready Schools that was part of , a summit convened by federal agencies with programs for young children. Sandy describes the involvement of 40 schools in Ohio’s Ready Schools project, discusses some potentially surprising findings from a survey of Ohio principals and helps to flesh out what a “ready school” really looks like.
